Saysutshun Giants
Rock solid, yet so animated.
Emerging from the depths,
To enjoy this beautiful day.
Do they see me as I paddle?

A sacred place for the Snuneymuxw People.
For me, the Stone Giants of Saysutshun Island
Are profiles of my Mum and Dad.
Transcended from Trincomali Channel.
The rockweed reminds me of my Dad’s hairy back.
The Sailer
My Dad was a Sailer in the Navy.
He was tall and lean and dashing in his Sailer uniform.
My Mum was sweet and petite.
She was from a generation where she expected to get married and raise a family, but I would like to have met the vibrant, independent single woman I’ve seen in old photos.
Summer of 1945
The war had ended and it was time to get on with life.
I’m not really sure how my parents met, but I choose to believe it was on the Beach in White Rock.
Swept off their feet, no time to lose, and the story goes they were married within three weeks, September 6th, 1945. Spontaneous combustion.
